Arctic blast arrives, expected to bring cold temperatures for rest of the week
Arctic cold air has arrived in Eastern Carolina this Tuesday evening, and with clear skies and calm conditions (inland), we expect great conditions for radiational cooling tonight. That means low temperatures will drop to 16-20 degrees over the inland areas, 20-24 degrees on the inner banks rivers and sounds and 24-28 degrees at the beach.
We should be down to 32 degrees (freezing) by 7:00pm Tuesday evening, so it will be an all-night freeze. Take precautions to protect your home's water pipes and remember pets that normally stay outside will struggle with Tuesday night's bitter cold. The breeze will hold up along the coast, keeping its temperatures up a couple of degrees. But the wind will produce wind chill values that will be equal to or colder than the actual temperatures inland.
Wednesday looks to be mostly sunny but cold, with high temps of only 36-40 degrees. At least the wind will not be as strong, taking a bit of the bite out of the cold. Wednesday night will be cold, with low temperatures in the range of 24-28 degrees on the mainland and 28-32 degrees at the beach.
Thursday should be mostly sunny and not as cold, with high temperatures in the lower 40's. Another shot of cold will arrive Thursday night, taking low temperatures down to the 20-24 degree range, as clouds roll back into the East.
Friday will be mostly cloudy, with rain showers developing by late afternoon. High temperatures will be near 50 degrees. Rain will continue Friday night and as low temperatures drop down to the upper 20's and lower 30's, the rain could mix with snow or ice, or might change over to snow/ice before ending late Friday night or early Saturday morning. At present, no accumulation is expected.
Saturday starts with some clouds, but then becomes mostly sunny. But the high temperature will only make it up to 40 degrees. Saturday night should be clear, with lows in the lower 20's.
Sunday should be mostly sunny and chilly, with the high near 4 degrees. A warmup will come our way for Monday and Tuesday.
