KINSTON, LENOIR COUNTY -

A 9-year-old boy who nearly drowned at a water park in Kinston remains in serious condition at a hospital Tuesday, officials said.

The Kinston Department of Public Safety said the child nearly drowned at Lions Water Adventure, located at 2602 W. Vernon Ave., at about 1:34 p.m. Monday.

The boy --who was with the City of Rocky Mount Williford Summer Day Camp-- became unconscious, and was given CPR.

As of Tuesday evening, the 9-year-old boy is in serious condition and remains at Vidant Medical Center, said Tameka Kenan-Norman, the public affairs manager for the City of Rocky Mount.

The child's name has not been released.

Bill Johnson, the director of the Kinston Department of Public Safety, released this statement Tuesday:

"The safety of everyone, particularly the kids, visiting the Woodmen Waterpark is our number one priority.  We are very concerned for each child and we are in contact with this child's family to offer our support.  All of us are praying for his recovery."

There is no word on where in the park the accident occurred or what led up to it.

The water park was closed Tuesday, but is scheduled to reopen at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, the staff told NewsChannel 12.
