4-year-old boy, great-grandfather killed in house fire

ROCKY MOUNT, EDGECOMBE COUNTY - A 4-year-old boy and his great-grandfather were both killed in a house fire Monday night, officials said.

The fire happened at about 9:49 p.m. Monday at 1713 Springfield Road in Rocky Mount, said Mike Varnell, the assistant chief of the Rocky Mount Fire Department.

When crews arrived at the scene, a single-story home and a van were both fully engulfed in flames, according to a news release from the City of Rocky Mount.

Varnell said a 4-year-old boy and his 63-year-old great-grandfather both died in the house fire. They were found dead when crews entered the home.

Eric McKnight lives across the street he says he saw rescue crews giving the Fasegha and his great-grandson CPR.

"They worked hard the whole time they tried everything they could," said McKnight.

The 63-year-old's name is Frederick Fasegha, according to his wife, Monzell. She also identified the 4-year-old as Isaiah Crews.

The house is considered a total loss, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, Varnell said.

No one else was inside the house when the fire happened.

Frederick Fasegha's wife Monzell was emotional at the scene.

"He was a friend to everybody," said Monzell Fasegha. "He didn't have no enemies he did anything for anybody."

Neighbors said they believe the fire started at the van outside the home and spread to the residence. They said the 63-year-old victim was wheelchair-bound.
