JACKSONVILLE, ONSLOW COUNTY -

Three suspects appeared in court Monday for allegedly shooting a man in Onslow County, and investigators said a custody battle may have sparked the attack.

Latasha Rene Sutton, Dwayne Robinson and Juston Paul Johnson have each been charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping and felony conspiracy. In addition, Sutton has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse. All three suspects were being held under $550,000 bonds. Their next court appearance was scheduled for Sept. 16.

Investigators said the three suspects were involved in a shooting Friday night on Hammock Lane in Jacksonville. The victim, who did not want to be identified, described what happened.

"Some dude walking up the street all black, with a bullet proof vest, and he had black gloves. First thought, I paid him no mind. But then, I thought O.J. Simpson. It's 97 degrees outside and he is wearing black gloves," the victim said.

According to the victim, the man then pointed a gun at his face without saying a word.

"I smacked him and ran. He fired one shot in the back of my building. He hit me in the back of the calf but I kept running," the victim explained.

The victim said the man threw him on the ground and shot him in the right thigh. According to the victim, while the attack was happening, his kids were taken from his apartment and put in a getaway car driven by his ex-wife, Sutton.

Officers said they found the suspects as they were leaving the area and took them into custody.

The victim said the attack probably stemmed from an ongoing custody battle between him and Sutton. Records showed they were married in 2010, but the victim said they are not together anymore.

According to investigators, Robinson has a Cameron address; Johnson and Sutton have Fayetteville addresses.
