HALIFAX COUNTY - Investigators say a 2-year-old and a teen died in separate shootings in Halifax County that happened just hours apart.
The Halifax County Sheriff's Office told ABC affiliate WTVD the first shooting happened at 9:30 p.m. Monday near 11th and Maple Streets outside Weldon. A 15-year-old boy was killed in that shooting, deputies said. The victim's identity has not been released.
In addition, a 20-year-old was shot in the back and a 17-year-old was shot in the leg, said deputies.
About three hours later, at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Weldon Police responded to the 600 block of Cedar Street, where shots were fired into a home.
Police Chief Mark Macon told WTVD the gunman walked up to the house, then fired shots into a window.
A 2-year-old girl was killed in the second shooting, police said. Family members identified her as Dayana Anderson.
The toddler's 54-year-old grandmother, Katherine Price, was hurt, said police. At last check, she was in critical condition at a hospital.
The 2-year-old's grandfather told WTVD they were sleeping when they heard three shots.
The scene of the second shooting is less than a mile away from the first shooting. Police said it's unclear if the two are related.
No arrest has been made and there is no word on a motive. Anyone with information can call the Halifax County Sheriff's Office at 252-583-8201, the Weldon Police Department at 252-536-3136, or CrimeStoppers at 252-583-4444.
