12-year-old from Eastern Carolina killed in N.Y. bike accident
Funeral arrangements have been set for a 12-year-old Newport native killed in a bicycle accident in New York.
Imani Tyshawn Gilbert's funeral is scheduled to to be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Newport, according to his obituary. Burial will follow at Bayview Cemetery in Morehead City.
The 12-year-old Gilbert was biking to his first football practice at Herbert Hoover Middle School in Buffalo, N.Y. on Aug. 22. That was when a car hit the boy at an intersection, his family said.
Gilbert was pinned under the vehicle and it took a group of passers-by to free him, according to The Buffalo News. The victim was taken to Women and Children's Hospital in Buffalo, where he died the next day.
"All I have left is a lock of his hair," Amy Tupaz, Gilbert's mother, said. "
"He was perfect. He was good-mannered, good-hearted he loved being a big brother."
Gilbert was an incoming eighth-grader at Herbert Hoover Middle School and a member of the football team.
"Football was his life," Tupaz said. "That's what he wanted to do with his life."
Police said it did not appear the driver who hit Gilbert was at fault, The Buffalo News reported. The driver was turning on a green light, investigators said. In addition, drugs, alcohol or cellphone use were not involved. No charges have been filed.
Gilbert is survived by his father, Terrance Ferguson of Tonawanda, N.Y., his mother, Amy Tupaz of Newport, five brothers, six sisters, paternal grandparents and great-grandparents.
The family did not have life insurance on Gilbert. They expect to pay all medical and funeral costs out of pocket.
