Impending nor'easter lashes NC Outer Banks
(AP) - Rough weather is ahead for the Outer Banks with a nor'easter weather system moving in.
The National Weather Service says coastal flooding, rain and wind gusts up to 40 mph were expected. The state transportation department suspended operations of the Currituck Sound ferry Sunday because strong, steady winds have pushed water toward the mainland and resulted in extremely low water.
The DOT is opening and closing four-wheel-drive traffic along a battered section of N.C. Highway 12 on Hatteras Island as high tides threaten the asphalt ribbon and back away. The highway was badly damaged by Superstorm Sandy
The weather service office in Newport says heavy weather conditions could last until Wednesday evening.
