$40M yacht docks in New Bern for MUMFest
New attraction for annual event
It's hard not to notice the 62-foot-high and 228-foot-long yacht at the end of the dock at the New Bern Grand Marina.
New Bern is the SeaFair's last stop before returning back home. Capt. Craig Matthews was on hand to offer a tour of the $40 million vessel.
"It was built for being a floating art gallery," Matthews said.
There are 28 exhibit spaces for international artists to display their work. The second deck has more art spaces, and the third deck has the glass-walled lounge; the fourth deck is the SkyDeck with a panoramic view of New Bern.
"When I saw this I thought we did the right thing. This is a fabulous venue for New Bern," said Susan Moffat-Thomas with Swiss Bear Downtown Development.
The SeaFair has a skeleton crew of about eight members that travel up and down the East Coast. When they come to a port, they hire about 30 more staff members from the local community.
"We'll hire the food and beverage director. We'll hire all the bartenders, servers and general labor to help bring artwork on and off," Matthews said.
Organizers say they are hoping the SeaFair will draw a lot of community support this year and for MUMFests to come.
"We're looking at the present, but we are also looking at the future," Moffat-Thomas said.
The mega yacht will be docked through the weekend and head back to Florida on Monday.
