Matt Callihan joined the WCTI StormTrack 12 team in April 2016 as the weekend evening meteorologist and weekday reporter.
Matt is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, and he is excited to be back in his home state.
As a young child, Matt always knew he wanted to be a meteorologist. His interest in weather started when he was five while watching a distant thunderstorm with his father just outside of Charlotte. The storm approached so quickly that they were nearly blown off their chairs from the gust front, inevitably spiking his interest in weather that never went away.
Matt received his Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and studied Climatology and Hydrology in his graduate program. Matt worked on various research projects during his post-graduate career including several U.S. Forest Service contracts involving beetle kill prevention and even a NASA project helping to determine snow data from satellites.
After his graduate work, Matt moved out West to work as the weekend meteorologist at KEZI-TV in Eugene, Oregon. On the West Coast, he was able to report on everything from earthquakes to tsunamis, and even a rare tornado during his time there.
Matt loves nature and being outdoors and can likely be found hiking, mountain biking, camping, playing soccer, snowboarding, running or snow skiing.
