A heavily updated Civic sedan was introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show Thursday, just one year after Honda fully redesigned the popular small car.
It’s not unusual to give a car a makeover two or three years after a full redesign. However, Honda is making these changes just one year after the all-new Civic was introduced for 2012. That car was not well received in the media due to its relatively cheap materials and lackluster styling.
"Our industry has never been more competitive or fast changing, and a significant refresh of Civic, America's best-selling compact car, just one model year after its debut as an all-new model shows true speed to market," said John Mendel, American Honda executive vice president of sales.
Up front, the Civic now shares several styling cues with its larger sibling, the Accord, which is all-new for 2013. The rear has also been updated with a new trunk and new taillights.
Honda said handling is improved and the new car is quieter thanks to several chassis upgrades, re-tuned steering and a revised suspension.
Inside, popular features have been made standard, like Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, voice-to-text messaging system and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.
Honda is also wasting no time in getting the new car to dealers. Sales of the new car began at the time of Thursday’s announcement.
