Christ Church Announces 10th Annual Cookie Walk!
  12/6/2008 | 10:00AM - 3:00PM
Christ Church Announces 10th Annual Cookie Walk!

New Bern, NC - - The 10th annual Christ Church Cookie Walk will be held Saturday, December 6 from 10am to 3pm, with homemade cookies, candies, and crafts. Light lunch will be served at the Cookie Walk Café with entertainment throughout the day by the Middle Street Moods.

Cookie Walk is the Episcopal Church Women’s largest annual fund-raiser. “Folks line up early, from all over New Bern, to purchase our homemade cookies and candies, and creative handmade crafts,” says Harriet Milde, President of the Christ Church Episcopal Church Women (ECW). “The event really has a following; some folks start their Christmas season with the Cookie Walk! It’s so successful because the parish comes together and it’s really fun! All of our cookies and candies are homemade - no store-bought or slice-and-bake - only homemade.”

At the Cookie Walk, which was started in 1999, folks pick up a box and gloves, and walk the maze of homemade treats filling up their box with favorites from the dozens of tables loaded with homemade cookies and candies Treats are sold by the pound. Last year, more than 12,000 cookies were lovingly prepared and donated by parishioners, raising more than $5,500 for the ECW’s outreach mission budget.

Former New Bern residents and Christ Church parishioners Gisela and George Ives will be autographing their book 'In God's Hands: A Noblewoman's Struggle for Survival in War and Revolution'. The work is based on the memoirs of Gisela's mother, Ellen von zur Muehlen, who died in New Bern in 1985.

Homemade soups and sandwiches are available at the Cookie Walk Café and the day’s entertainment is provided by The Middle Street Moods band. This is one fine hometown bake sale!

instruments as button accordion, fiddle, guitar, and flute. The repertoire includes
Irish jigs, reels, hornpipes, and songs. Audience members are welcome to sing along
and sit in.

A slow-play session is usually offered for beginners at 7:00, followed by the
regular session at about 7:40.

A Celebration of the Art of the Nativity

Experience a unique display of the art of the Nativity as expressed in music, figurines, ornaments, jewelry, books and paintings at First Presbyterian Church 1600 Arendell St. Morehead City, on Saturday December 13 from noon-4pm and Sunday December 14th from 1-5pm. Admission is free to the public as the church extends the invitation to celebrate the true reason for this festive season.
Inspired by collectors who wanted a way to offer their private Nativity collections for display during the holiday season, this event highlights the vision of artists around the world who seek to bring the Nativity scene of long ago to life in art. Over 150 art pieces are scheduled for the exhibit.
The history of Nativity displays, depictions of the birth of Christ, began in Italy when St. Francis of Assisi created a manger filled with hay, an ox and a donkey. Historians believe that he was influenced by the nativity artwork that began to appear in the 12th century. Nativities or creches became common in homes during the Christmas season late in the 1800’s. Today churches sponsor live Nativity plays and homes around the world display crèches loving unwrapped each year with the manger scene carefully re-constructed according to family tradition. The University of Dayton has assembled the world’s largest collection of Nativities with over 900 scenes from around the world.
Collectors treasure the wide variety of Nativity art. Creches come as small as the etching on the head of a pin and larger than life in wood and clay. They can be incredibly valuable or inexpensive dime store creations in plastic or polymers. Elegance can be seen in an Italian Fontanini set or whimsy in the childlike cherubs of Precious Moments. Even lighted, plastic front-lawn figures have their place in the lore of the nativity. Stained

BEAUFORT, NC: Beaufort-by-the-Sea’s 300th Anniversary Celebration will begin
in just two
short weeks as organizers commence the tricentennial with a New Year’s Eve
bash that is sure
to be the biggest the town has seen to date. Plans for the year-long
commemoration are being finalized, and this December 31st will be the

to visit their favorite Beaufort eatery for a fabulous local
dinner, and then plan to come to the North River Club’s Party Deck (entrance
on Highway 70, inside the cart barn
near the Pro Shop) where a spectacular evening’s gala will begin at 9:00
p.m. Tickets are being
sold at a low-priced $25 per person with a cash bar, while snacks and
“finger-food” will be served until midnight. The musical entertainment being
provided for this memorable night can’t be beat, and guests will enjoy
dancing the night away. Then, the Town of Beaufort, with Mayors and town
officials past and present will ring in the New Year with a grand
presentation from the Atlantic Beach Fire Department Emerald Society Pipes &
Drums and 3 cannon fire to represent each century of the Town’s history. The
Boardwalk Café will then bring in a bountiful breakfast spread to start the
year off right. Launch the year 2009, the three hundredth anniversary of the

Cancer Support Group Offers Hope and Help
“Foundations for Healing” Begins Second Series January 15, 2009

NEW BERN, NC – The Cancer Committee of Craven Regional Medical Center in partnership with CCHC New Bern Cancer Care is offering the second series of cancer support group meetings focusing on the needs of the recently diagnosed cancer patient.
“Foundations for Healing” will meet six times over a 12-week period in the Cancer Care Center conference room on the Craven Regional Medical Center campus. The group, limited to 12 participants, will gather at 2:00 p.m. for 90 minutes of hope, help and support. The first meeting of the series will be held January 15, 2009.
“There are a multitude of complicated issues the newly diagnosed cancer patient faces,” said Shirley Rogers, MSW, M.DIV., New Bern Cancer Care. “These include anxiety, fear, crisis of self-identity, recovery, financial concerns and the significant impact cancer can have on family dynamics,” she explained.
“We lead each meeting with a concerted effort, an organized approach and, most importantly, compassionate guidance,” said Keith Little, BCC, M.DIV, Craven Regional Medical Center Clinical Chaplain. “We recognize the journey to recovery is much more involved than just treating the physical. There is a difference between cure and healing, we focus on healing and finding hope in the midst of our struggles,” he added.
Topics of discussion and areas explored include the importance of finding emotional support, how to seek new perspectives, accepting help from others, identifying strengths and dealing with the “new normal” that accompanies a diagnosis.
“A support group is a safe place to express emotions, be heard and understood,” explained Little. “Even though participants have been diagnosed with different types of cancer, the empowerment that comes from the conversation gives those at the table the courage necessary to move forward

City of Greenville's Kids' Dance Workshop

City of Greenville's Aquatics and Fitness Center will host a Kids' Dance Workshop
beginning Saturday, January 17 through Saturday, February 21 from 10 - 11 am. This
event will provide participants with an opportunity to learn the latest dance moves
from movies like High School Musical and Camp Rock.

These hour long classes will be offered for 6 weeks to all kids between the ages of
6 and 11 years old at no charge.

Lack of physical activity and a high fat diet have contributed to a dramatic
increase in the number of overweight children in our country. The City of
Greenville is aware of these increasing numbers and wants to offer kids an
opportunity to participate in a fun, interactive dance class to get kids moving.
This unique program will be presented in a non competitive format with emphasis on
getting kids active.

As a reminder, this is free to all kids ages 6 to 11 years old. No sign up is
required. Just have your parents bring you Saturday, January 17. This program will
be held in the basketball gym.

Greenville Aquatics & Fitness Center is located at 921 Staton Rd. in the Industrial
Park off of Hwy 264-Alternate. For more information, please call 329-4041.
