Elizabeth Bynum started her career as a college grad who produced the weekend newscasts. Three years later, she’s the executive producer. She hasn’t gone far from her first job to her current one – her broadcast career has been right here at NewsChannel 12!
In November of 2009, Elizabeth took a weekend producing job in New Bern, North Carolina; within a few months, she was promoted to the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. producer. In January of 2011, Elizabeth was promoted again to executive producer. During Elizabeth’s time at WCTI-TV, the newsroom has won numerous Associated Press awards including “Best Newscast” two years in a row, “Best Website” two years in a row, and “Outstanding News Operation of the Year” just last year.
Elizabeth is proud ‘Carolina Girl;’ not only was she born and raised in a suburb of Raleigh, but she is also an alumnae of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication. At Carolina, Elizabeth was an anchor for both the university’s Emmy-award winning television and radio newscasts. Elizabeth was also captain and an All-American for the university’s dance team, which consistently placed in the nation’s top 10 dance teams. If she weren’t in news, she’d be teaching jazz dance classes at any studio she could find.
Being a native North Carolinian, Elizabeth thrives on hurricane coverage; vivid memories of Hurricane Fran tearing up her neighborhood as a child made her realize how important television news can be to informing the public on emergencies. During Hurricane Irene, Elizabeth spent 60+ hours in the newsroom, producing extended coverage for -- at times -- 12 hours straight.
When she is not in the newsroom, Elizabeth likes to spend time with her husband, Benjamin, their two-year-old son, Macon, and their chocolate lab, Buddy. She has loved the Crystal Coast from her childhood to now, and she is proud to call New Bern home!
