Update: Man Bitten By Shark Off NC Coast
A shark bite victim was released from a hospital Friday, one day after a shark bit him off the Crystal Coast.
Donnie White was released from Carteret General Hospital Friday afternoon in good condition, a hospital spokesperson said.
White, who's from South Carolina, was bitten Thursday afternoon while he was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.
White was fishing about 13 miles from Beaufort Inlet with his family when he decided to cool off with a swim. That's when the shark bit him on the leg.
The boat rushed back to shore while family members wrapped White's leg in T-shirts and elevated it to stop the bleeding. The boat docked at Morehead City around 3 p.m. Thursday, and White was taken to Carteret General Hospital.
"He was in great spirits," said Jason Simmons, an employee of the Sanitary Restaurant in Morehead City. "He was essentially laughing it off, even though there was lots of blood and emergency workers everywhere."
Other people who saw White being taken off the boat were also surprised at his calm and collected disposition.
"When I saw them come in, I wasn't sure they were the people that had the shark attack," Millard Butterworth said. "They were all very chill, and family members were taking pictures of the bite."
Thursday's incident is the third shark attack in North Carolina this summer.
