A convicted sex offender was found dead in Beaufort County, and deputies there are treating it as a homicide.
Bobby Ray Buck, 33, was found shot at what was at first believed to be the scene of a car accident by a 911 call of a "bad wreck." The 911 caller said there was a grey Honda Accord in the woods with someone inside unresponsive.
Buck is listed in the N.C. Department of Corrections website as a convicted and registered sex offender. Buck was convicted of indecent liberties with a minor in 2004, according to records.
The Beaufort County Sheriff?s Office received a 911 call early morning Wednesday reporting a motor vehicle accident on Minor Run Road in the town of Edward. First responders from Aurora Fire and EMS responded to the scene and discovered a man in a car with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Deputies responded to the location and secured the scene with the assistance of the Aurora responders.
When asked if Buck's status as a registered sex offender is related to the case, a sheriff's spokesman said they do not believe the title is related to his death. Officials said the identify of the suspect and the motive would not yet be released. Buck had a court appearance scheduled Tuesday on two misdemeanor drug charges.
Family members of the victim's girlfriend declined to speak to a reporter.
