U.S. Senators Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) and Richard Burr (R-NC) are asking the Federal Highway Administration to authorize emergency funding to repair Highway 12 in Dare County, which badly damaged by Tropical Storm Ida.
"The rains and wind from Tropical Storm Ida have isolated the people who live on Hatteras Island and rely on Highway 12 to drive inland," Sen. Hagan said. "This emergency funding will give our state the tools to quickly rebuild this artery that is critical to the Outer Banks’ economy and way of life. I am urging the Federal Highway Administration to act quickly on the state’s request."
Heavy rain and flooding from Ida damaged Highway 12 in Rodanthe on Hatteras Island, washing out nearly 800 feet of pavement.
Governor Beverly Perdue declared an emergency for Dare County.
