A real estate broker from Franklin says he was lucky even before he won almost $700,000 from the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Brian Rowland said Friday he will use some of the winnings to pay off medical bills that built up when his wife was successfully treated for breast cancer.
Rowland won the first of six grand prizes awarded from The Red Hot Millions scratch off game. Winners can take a lump sum of $680,000 before taxes or a $1 million prize paid out of 20 years.
Rowland took the lump sum. He says he will also give some money to his church, pay off other bills and his mortgage and set up a college fund for his daughters.
