Alderman Keep Their Benefits

   The upcoming mayor in New Bern knows one thing he wants to change in city hall.

Mayor-elect Lee Bettis he wants to change the health benefits for former board members. Right now board members that have served at least 16 years can receive health benefits for life.

More than six hundred people signed a petition asking the alderman to take back those benefits. The board to no action at Tuesday's meeting.

At the meeting Linda Baysden told the Alderman, "A lot of people are very, very disappointed with you alderman, that voted yourself in this health care. It's not right for me being a paying citizen for you elected officials to benefit from this."

Former city council members in Greenville, Kinston, Washington, Morehead City and Jacksonville cannot receive health benefits with the city.
